About the Hunter Respiratory and Sleep Centre

Hunter Respiratory and Sleep Center offers a full range of lung function tests using state-of-the-art equipment in our laboratory supervised by our highly qualified respiratory and sleep consultant physician

Dr. Tun Myat

Dr Tun Myat is a respiratory and sleep consultant physician. After his graduation in 2003, he went to the UK and worked in several NHS hospitals for further post-graduation training. Dr. Myat completed his basic physician training at Liverpool Hospital and completed his advanced training in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at The Royal North Shore and St George Hospitals. He has extensive knowledge and a special interest in respiratory failure, non-invasive ventilation and worked as a Sleep/Respiratory Failure fellow at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney.

Dr. Myat is a visiting physician at Maitland Private and Lake Macquarie Private Hospital. He also worked as a senior staff specialist at Maitland Public Hospital for many years. Due to increasing community demand, he decided to serve the hunter community at his private practice. He is a founder and director of both Hunter Respiratory and Sleep Centre and Maitland pulmonary function laboratory. Dr. Myat is a Conjoint lecturer of South West Sydney Clinical School. He also has a strong affiliation with the Thoracic Society of Australian and New Zeeland (TSANZ), Australasian Sleep Association (ASM), American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), and American College of Chest Physicians.

Dr. Myat specialises in sleep-related breathing problems (Obstructive Sleep Apnoea) and other non-respiratory sleep disorders such as Insomnia, Parasomnias, Circadian rhythm sleep disorder, and Narcolepsy. His respiratory specialties include a particular interest in Airway diseases, Pulmonary hypertension, Chronic respiratory failure, Non-invasive ventilation, and Interventional bronchoscopy.

Dr. Ken Goon
MBBS FRACP
Respiratory Physician

 

Ken graduated from the University of Newcastle, Australia in 2008. He has trained exclusively in the Hunter New England area health network through his medical career, culminating in Fellowship with the Royal Australian College of Physicians in General and Respiratory Medicine in 2018.

Currently, Ken is appointed as a Staff Specialist in General and Respiratory Medicine in the Hunter network. He is a member of the COPD Alliance Project, an initiative targeted at improving clinical outcomes following hospitalisation for airways exacerbations in an outpatient setting. He holds a Conjoint Fellowship with the University of Newcastle, a position which allows him to deliver an ongoing contribution as an educator to the junior medical community. He is also affiliated with the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (TSANZ), from which he has obtained certification in thoracic ultrasound.

Apart from a broad enthusiasm for respiratory medicine, Ken has specific interests in airways disease, lung cancer and interventional procedures (including bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound and pleural procedures).

Dr. Emile Altmann
MBBS FRACP
Respiratory Physician

 

Emile graduated from the University of Melbourne in 2004.  He completed his Basic Physician Training in Melbourne before completing Advanced training in Respiratory and General and Acute Medicine at the John Hunter and Gosford Hospitals.  Emile is currently employed as a Staff Specialist at the John Hunter Hospital.

 

Emile is published with the Cochrane Collaboration of Systematic Reviews and is affiliated with the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand and the Internal Medicine Society of Australia and New Zealand. He has been involved with Junior Medical Officer and medical student education for many years. 

 

Emile has a broad interest in all facets of respiratory medicine.  He has particular interests in airways disease, upper airway dysfunction and unexplained and complex breathlessness.

 

When not at work, Emile has keen interests in Orienteering, Rogaining and trying not to get lost.

Dr. Lucy Lawrence
MBBS FRACP
Respiratory and Sleep Physician

Dr. Lucy Lawrence is a Hunter Respiratory and Sleep Physician with special interest in respiratory infections and immune system interactions and function.  

 

Dr. Lawrence was born in the Hunter and completed her high school studies locally.  She studied medicine through The University of New England and graduated with distinction.  Lucy completed her junior medical training through the Hunter New England Network before moving to Sydney to further her specialty training in respiratory and sleep medicine through St. Vincents and Westmead Hospitals.  Dr. Lawrence was admitted to Fellowship of The Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) in 2020.

 

Dr. Lawrence returned to the Hunter Valley in 2021 and is glad to be close to her family.  Dr. Lawrence also has an appointment as a Staff Specialist through the Calvary Mater Hospital in Newcastle.  Dr. Lawrence enjoys bronchoscopy and contributing to the training of junior doctors.

 

Dr. Lawrence believes in patient-centred care and individualised healthcare.  She is an excellent communicator and hopes to encourage better patient understanding of their condition and management.

 

Lucy and her husband have welcomed a baby girl into their family in 2022.  Dr. Lawrence will return to the practice in 2023.

Dr. Paul Meatcher
MBChB MRCP FRACP
Respiratory Physician

Paul graduated from Leicester University, United Kingdom in 2011.  He completed his basic training in the Hunter New England area before completing his Advanced training

in Respiratory medicine in Sydney and Newcastle.  Alongside private practice in Respiratory medicine he works as a Staff Specialist in General and Respiratory medicine at the Calvary Mater in Newcastle.

 

In particular, Paul has an interest in lung cancers and interstitial lung disease but enjoys seeing a broad range of Respiratory diseases.  He is also interested in medical education and participates regularly in teaching junior doctors and medical students.

 

Outside of medicine, he enjoys spending time with his young family and exploring the fantastic natural environment that Australia has to offer.
